There are many children in Hu’u District who are not living with their parents. Some are victims of broken homes. Some are the children of parents who migrated out of the region/overseas for employment but never returned. Some children become orphans when their parents died from accidents or disease. These children normally live with an uncle, auntie or grandparent who cannot afford to care for the children properly. Orphans in Hu’u Subdistrict face many problems such as limited access to education, drug use, alcoholism, sexual harassment, and child exploitation. Children are the future of our country. They are eager to learn new skills that can make their communities better. In our social activities, it is often the children who help us pick up plastic trash on the beach or help us weed our gardens. But orphan children are at risk from bad influences and lack of resources. They need our help.
The realization of a prosperous, independent, noble, trustworthy and caring generation of orphans
1). Protect and provide, food, clothing and shelter and a decent living for orphans and neglected children.
2). Provide psychological and moral/religious guidance so orphans develop good character.
3). Provide education in good formal schools.
4). Provide occupational training/apprenticeships in organic farming, earth science/the environment, industrial arts such as welding, information technology, food service/hospitality, communications, and so on
Over the years we have been privileged to make many friends from different cultures and faith traditions. These generous friends have taught us that the power of compassion is universal to all the great cultures of the world. With their help we pursued environmental clean-up, volunteered on health projects in remote hamlets, and introduced organic farming to the Cempi Bay region of Sumbawa Island. Recently we created Backy Lakey Dompu Foundation to help underprivileged children and orphans in material and non-material matters.
Our goal is to be a positive influence in the lives of as many children as possible. To accomplish this, we are building a youth center for disadvantaged children and orphans. The center, which we call Good Earth Farm, already offers regular programs every Friday. With the new facility, we can offer two-week residential youth camps.
We are grateful to Health Access Sumbawa Australia.
